X-Factor #1: They're a family.

Comics and Corporate Responsibility: The Team Book Edition

I really love reading comics about teams. Individual titles are interesting. They let you get a sense for what a character thinks of him or herself, and they show you what that person’s thoughts and actions are like when they’re interacting with a few other heroes, but for the most part, they’re about solo crime-fighting activities or what the character does with their family or friends. Take the current run of Hawkeye, for instance: it alternates between Clint and Kate (and occasionally Pizza Dog) taking on their own enemies, but it also has Clint dealing with relationship issues and his brother showing up, and Kate leaving home and moving across the country. The book focuses on who they are as people, as it rightly should – it’s a book about them, after all. Team books are different. Where individual titles give you a sense of who the characters are as people, a team book gives you a sense of who they are as heroes. Batman on his own is different than he is while he’s part of the Justice League. Iron Man’s behavior in his solo title is different from how he behaves in a group dynamic. Team stories show what I feel are more honest interactions – ones where the heroes aren’t hiding their skills behind civilian identities or lying about who they are. Even in the case of heroes whose civilian identities aren’t known to their teammates, the hero in question – let’s just call him Batman, for sake of discussion – is still more able to be honest with his colleagues as Batman than he is in his day-to-day life as Bruce Wayne, head of Wayne Enterprises.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #6 - see the linked review X-Factor #232 - The story arc ends with a lot of great humor and possibly setting up some future arcs

X-Men Legacy #260.1

Eric's Week 10 Pull List

[caption id=“attachment_434” align=“alignleft” width=“197” caption=“X-Men Legacy #260.1”] [/caption] X-Men Legacy #260.1 - Rogue and team head to Wolverine’s school to work security. They struggle with the idea of keeping the kids from having the X-Men childhood they did. The book leaves Mike Carey’s hands, but Christos Gage does a good job with his first issue. Superboy Vol 5 #5 - a little more forward momentum on the story, but not much Magneto: Not A Hero #3 - this mini-series continues to explore how Magneto has and hasn’t evolved over the years. Depending on how it ends next month, could be something I recommend for the trades Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #677 - the start of a short crossover with Daredevil. It’s a fun story and I’m curious to see how it ends [caption id=“attachment_435” align=“alignright” width=“193” caption=“Batwoman #5”] [/caption] ...

X-23 #17

Eric's Pull List for Week 4

Last week was a very heavy comic release week for me. I enjoyed almost all of them;Batman most of all, as you already know . [caption id=“attachment_217” align=“alignleft” width=“197” caption=“Amazing Spider-Man #674”] [/caption] Generation Hope #13 - I continue to enjoy the dynamic between all the members of Generation Hope although I feel that the book is suffering from being a monthly book that is trying to work on both the personal drama and the action and both end up suffering. X-Men #21 - This book continues to do a much better job post-regenesis of keeping me interested. The team is still out in Eastern Europe working on figuring out who’s buying black market Sentinels X-Factor #227 - the idea was great, but the fight was so chaotic I kept losing track of what was going on. Basically they’re trying to fight a demonic force that killed a kid’s mom and is now killing others Red Hood and the Outlaws #3 - I really liked learning more about the characters in this book. This is another book that feels like each month it has to make a hard decision about whether to focus on action or backstory and I like them both. Amazing Spider-Man #674 - the beginning of a new arc with Vulture as the main villain. It was just like almost all first arc issues - a lot of setup and not as good as I’m sure it’ll get when we’re deep into it.
