Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1: Interview with Ziggy Blumenthal of Sidekicked and Operation Pajama Pants

Who doesn’t sometimes wish they could prove that they’re much better at their job than their boss? What if the stakes were even higher because you’re a super hero sidekick? That’s what Ziggy Blumenthal and Cory Harris are exploring in Sidekicked! Is that too boring for you? Too run of the mill? Ok, what about Operation Pajama Pants? What the heck is that? Well, check out my interview with the artist on both books: ...

Baltimore Comic-Con 2015 Day 1: Interview with Tiffany Ciper of Alien Spike

The first interview I conducted this year was with Tiffany Ciper of Alien Spike, a web comic that is in the middle of a Kickstarter to fund a physical print copy of the book. https://youtu.be/FhKs1CRWzeI Just like Kata Kane, who I interviewed last year, the art in this comic was inspired by manga. While Altar Girl is about a high school girl visited by angels and demons, Alien Spike is about school kids and aliens. Or, as Ms Ciper describes it, “A JRPG meets Space Opera”. That sounds like it’s definitely something up my alley. Comic POW! will definitely be taking a look at this story in the future (once the Comic-Con rush is over). ...

Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1-1 - web

Comic POW! will be at Baltimore Comic-Con 2015

Just as in years past, I’ll be covering Baltimore Comic-Con this year. There will be a post per day where I’ll be live-blogging at the event. Then, each night I’ll post as many interviews and panel posts as I can get in before the day is up. Also look for cosplay posts, hopefully daily -but it’ll depend on the rendering speed of the software. Speaking of rendering, I’m hoping to incorporate video this year in addition to the audio interviews I’ve done for the past few years. If last year is any indication, I’m probably going to end up with more information and footage than I can post every day, so keep checking back even after Comic-Con is over. ...

Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe (in Color!)

I read Scott Pilgrim in its original manga-sized, black and white form when it first came out. With the final volume of the color version coming out this year, I thought it would be a great time to revisit the story as well as looking at how the addition of color changes things. I’ll be exploring the story and themes volume by volume. This time, volume 5. For the most part, everyone’s era of extended adolescence is coming to an end. Some of the blame for this development can be laid upon the shoulders of Stephen Stiles; the longer the band goes without practicing, the more adrift the characters feel. They start looking for other things to bring meaning to life and that includes growing up and realizing the dream of the band is mostly over. Kim Pines decides to move back to her hometown. Even Scott Pilgrim declares he’ll be the best 24 year old ever. His only lacking trait in this volume seems to be his inability to remember the key to his apartment. By the end, his parents have even helped him get his own place.

So, here’s a weekly feature that’ll go from now until I run out of images. Robin is ready to expose himself

Love Hina 14 - Featured Image

Understanding Japanese Culture, Humor, and Gender Through Love Hina Part 14

note on all the image scans: they are correct manga-style so they are read right to left Spend enough time doing critical readings of media and you come across the assertion that all media tells you about the culture it was written in. Sometimes, as in contemporary media, this is easy to tease out. Other times, as with science fiction, it’s by extrapolation. So I thought it might be interesting to re-read Love Hina, by Ken Akamatsu, as a way to to understand Japanese culture. Part One can be found here.

Invincible

In Case You Missed it: Image Expo Edition

Lots of news and press releases come out in the summer because of all the conventions. Sometimes it slips through the cracks. Here are some announcements from Image Expo in July: INVINCIBLE: REBOOT I haven’t read Invincible yet, but I keep hearing good things about it. THE WALKING DEAD editor and Skybound Entertainment’s Editorial Director Sean Mackiewicz announced the forthcoming reboot of Kirkman’s long-running superhero series, INVINCIBLE. In this new direction for INVINCIBLE, Mark suddenly finds himself without powers. Back home… but aware of everything he’s lived through. What does he change, who can he save… and how will he deal with his father now that he knows what’s coming? ...
