Baltimore Comic-Con 2017: Cosplay Interview - Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman

Last year I interviewed the winner of the costume contest and that was so much fun, I decided to interview more of the contestants as they were waiting to be judged. Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns are controversial in fandom. On the one hand, they helped bring Batman back into the general consciousness. On the other hand, they feature a Batman that is not very Batman-like. For example, many argue he allows Joker to plummet to his death in the first movie, but modern Batman never does stuff like that. Additionally, they may have seemed edgy in the 80s, but compared to the Nolan Batman Trilogy, they are almost as campy as the Adam West Batman. That said, most people think Michelle Pfeiffer really did an astounding job as Catwoman based on the script she had to work with. Elena, our interview subject, certainly thought so and decided to bring that version of Catwoman back to life. ...

Who are comics for?

This week I came across the following quote from a Paul Pope article: Asked by Yang if he had tried to do an all-ages book with a franchise character, Pope said he did test the waters, only to be knocked back. “Batman did pretty well, so I sat down with the head of DC Comics. I really wanted to do ‘Kamandi [The Last Boy on Earth]’, this Jack Kirby character. I had this great pitch… and he said ‘You think this is gonna be for kids? Stop, stop. We don’t publish comics for kids. We publish comics for 45-year olds. If you want to do comics for kids, you can do ‘Scooby-Doo.’ And I thought, ‘I guess we just broke up.’” ...

Video Review - Gotham City Sirens #20

[caption id=“attachment_625” align=“alignleft” width=“195” caption=“Gotham City Sirens #20”] [/caption] I’ve written a lot about ComiXology recently and, really, I just discovered one of the biggest benefits. And that’s the fact that I can go back and find issues that have come out months or even years ago and I can get them really cheaply. I don’t have to worry about a premium on the fact that they are issues that are very rare. I can get issues like Batman #38 for only a dollar or two dollars. So I decided part of what I’d do at Comic POW! is take an issues that I’d like to take a look at from Comixology and the issue’s going to be at least a month old if not a little more and in that case all these reviews will have spoilers and reveals because we know what happened. The issues are old enough that you don’t have to worry too much about spoilers. ...

Eric's Pull List for Week 4

Last week was a very heavy comic release week for me. I enjoyed almost all of them;Batman most of all, as you already know . [caption id=“attachment_217” align=“alignleft” width=“197” caption=“Amazing Spider-Man #674”] [/caption] Generation Hope #13 - I continue to enjoy the dynamic between all the members of Generation Hope although I feel that the book is suffering from being a monthly book that is trying to work on both the personal drama and the action and both end up suffering. X-Men #21 - This book continues to do a much better job post-regenesis of keeping me interested. The team is still out in Eastern Europe working on figuring out who’s buying black market Sentinels X-Factor #227 - the idea was great, but the fight was so chaotic I kept losing track of what was going on. Basically they’re trying to fight a demonic force that killed a kid’s mom and is now killing others Red Hood and the Outlaws #3 - I really liked learning more about the characters in this book. This is another book that feels like each month it has to make a hard decision about whether to focus on action or backstory and I like them both. Amazing Spider-Man #674 - the beginning of a new arc with Vulture as the main villain. It was just like almost all first arc issues - a lot of setup and not as good as I’m sure it’ll get when we’re deep into it.
