This was not only the first time Comic POW! covered the awards at Baltimore Comic-Con, it’s also the inaugural year of the Ringo Awards. There was a GREAT keynote speech by David Peterson of Mouse Guard. It was also the first time I was able to see Daryl McDaniels of Run DMC in person. If you attend Baltimore Comic-Con I highly recommend getting tickets to the award show. It’s nice and intimate, with dinner being served just prior to the awards. ...

The B-Movie, grind-house artwork at Scott Blair’s booth got my attention and I had to talk to him about this Vamps vs Wolves. The conversation wound through cinema, Florida, and Blair’s artistic process on the books. Expect an article on the story in the future! https://youtu.be/t219VQRGgek

People trying to get you to come to their table at Comic-Con say all kinds of things. Sometimes it’s funny and other times it’s witty. But not many people in the booths can mention that their comic involves Sean Bean. But that was what I overheard them saying at the Stranger Comics booth. I was enticed. So I came over and they talked about a shared universe across a bunch of different titles, each with compelling stories and characters. Who were these guys? You don’t really see shared universe at these tiny indie publishers. Heck, even Image barely does anything like that outside of a few events to mark anniversaries of books or of the publisher. Dynamite is the only indie I can think of that routinely does these sorts of things, and they’re pretty big compared to Stranger Comics. They told me to come by the next day and speak with Seb, who was both the founder and the author on many of the books. It was a very interesting discussion. ...

I LOVE walking around artist alley at Baltimore Comic-Con and discovering all the ways that comics are being creative and stretching beyond the super hero genre. Case in point, Tuskegee Heirs, a comic that takes inspiration from American History and melds it with Big Mech Manga to create something new. I took note of the booth as one I had to make sure to interview just based on the name and the art. ...

It was Batman Day on Saturday and so a panel of Batman and Bat-Family creatives came together to celebrate. It was the most interactive panel of the weekend and I loved that about it. They mentioned Harley would take over (a reference to Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner), but it did happen as the audience had many more questions about Harley than Batman. Last year I interviewed the winner of the costume contest and that was so much fun, I decided to interview more of the contestants as they were waiting to be judged. Although I Hate Fairyland is still on my to-read pile, I love the aesthetic and so I just had to speak to this person dressed as Gertrude. Turns out it’s someone who goes by the name of Kitten Pickles and who is quite famous for her I Hate Fairyland cosplay. She can be found on Facebook. ...
