Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1: Interview with Ireland Reid

Cosplay is such a fascinating form of self expression. While I know only a few people who put more than a couple hours thought into their Halloween costumes, cosplayers spend months to years working on costumes. There will be a massive cosplay gallery here on Comic POW! near the end of the coverage in which you’ll see some of the great costumes that people have made. With Ireland Reid, as with many other cosplayers, this is an expression of something she’s wanted to do since she was a little kid. It is a way for her to showcase her love of comics and her love of creation all at once. Watch our interview to learn more about what drives her to do this professionally. (She does mention she has a M-F job, but there is no doubt in my mind that Ms Reid is also a professional when it comes to cosplay) ...

Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1: Interview with Liz DeJesus

At the convention I had the pleasure of speaking with Liz DeJesus, a prolific author, who has written comics, books, and short stories. Her stories often contain Fairy Tale or Supernatural elements. Her book series, of which the first is First Frost, stood out to me as a great example of a book using Fairy Tale stories to explore a mother/daughter relationship. https://youtu.be/9bfm9Cf47Cg

Baltimore Comic-Con Day 3 Liveblog

It’s the final day of the convention. I’ve seen so many incredible costumes and spoken to so many great people about their projects. Today is the final day to experience all the wonder of this mid-Atlantic comic mecca. I still have 9 more videos to produce and post and that doesn’t count whoever I speak with today. So make sure to keep coming back for the next couple weeks. [liveblog] ...

Baltimore Comic-Con 2015 Day 2 Liveblog

I had lots of great interviews yesterday - so many that I was unfortunately unable to get them all rendered before I had to get some sleep! But if you look up at the featured posts on the main page’s header, you can see the ones that have been published so far. I’m quite excited for today! [liveblog]

Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1: Interview with Drew Crowder of Hashtag Comics

I spoke with Drew Crowder about this great publisher that is putting women in the forefront of its publications, #Hashtag Comics. https://youtu.be/vxLQw9frcYU Not only are women the lead characters in both Tailwands and Carpe Noctum, but the concepts sound particularly interesting - especially Carpe Noctum’s assertion that Las Vegas is run by Vampires, Werewolves, etc. Makes perfect sense for a city in which everyone’s asleep during the day. Baltimore Comic-Con Day 1: Interview with Ziggy Blumenthal of Sidekicked and Operation Pajama Pants

Who doesn’t sometimes wish they could prove that they’re much better at their job than their boss? What if the stakes were even higher because you’re a super hero sidekick? That’s what Ziggy Blumenthal and Cory Harris are exploring in Sidekicked! Is that too boring for you? Too run of the mill? Ok, what about Operation Pajama Pants? What the heck is that? Well, check out my interview with the artist on both books: ...

Baltimore Comic-Con 2015 Day 1: Interview with Tiffany Ciper of Alien Spike

The first interview I conducted this year was with Tiffany Ciper of Alien Spike, a web comic that is in the middle of a Kickstarter to fund a physical print copy of the book. https://youtu.be/FhKs1CRWzeI Just like Kata Kane, who I interviewed last year, the art in this comic was inspired by manga. While Altar Girl is about a high school girl visited by angels and demons, Alien Spike is about school kids and aliens. Or, as Ms Ciper describes it, “A JRPG meets Space Opera”. That sounds like it’s definitely something up my alley. Comic POW! will definitely be taking a look at this story in the future (once the Comic-Con rush is over). ...

Comic POW! will be at Baltimore Comic-Con 2015

Just as in years past, I’ll be covering Baltimore Comic-Con this year. There will be a post per day where I’ll be live-blogging at the event. Then, each night I’ll post as many interviews and panel posts as I can get in before the day is up. Also look for cosplay posts, hopefully daily -but it’ll depend on the rendering speed of the software. Speaking of rendering, I’m hoping to incorporate video this year in addition to the audio interviews I’ve done for the past few years. If last year is any indication, I’m probably going to end up with more information and footage than I can post every day, so keep checking back even after Comic-Con is over. ...

Scott Pilgrim vs The Universe Featured Image

Scott Pilgrim Vs The Universe (in Color!)

I read Scott Pilgrim in its original manga-sized, black and white form when it first came out. With the final volume of the color version coming out this year, I thought it would be a great time to revisit the story as well as looking at how the addition of color changes things. I’ll be exploring the story and themes volume by volume. This time, volume 5. For the most part, everyone’s era of extended adolescence is coming to an end. Some of the blame for this development can be laid upon the shoulders of Stephen Stiles; the longer the band goes without practicing, the more adrift the characters feel. They start looking for other things to bring meaning to life and that includes growing up and realizing the dream of the band is mostly over. Kim Pines decides to move back to her hometown. Even Scott Pilgrim declares he’ll be the best 24 year old ever. His only lacking trait in this volume seems to be his inability to remember the key to his apartment. By the end, his parents have even helped him get his own place.
