A New Look

You can easily tell by the time stamps that I haven’t updated the site in years. The other writers who contributed posts once upon a time also have moved on to other things. However, I hate the idea of information disappearing from the internet and links going bad, so I wanted to keep the site up. However, I did not want to continue to use a heavy platform like Wordpress when it wasn’t needed for the site. (Especially if it wasn’t getting updated by anyone other than me) I migrated the site to a static site builder which allows me to host it using less resources and, therefore, more cheaply. This way the content can remain without it costing me too much money. ...

Hawkeye TV show featured image

Hawkeye on Disney+: This is the Hawkeye You've Got

I’m a weird target for the Marvel TV shows. I don’t watch the movies. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen any of the movies since Disney/Marvel started making movies with the characters they hadn’t sold to Fox (X-Men, Fantastic Four) or Sony (Spider-Man). Well, I’ve seen Deadpool, but that one is off by itself. Back in the early 2000s I saw the X-Men and Spider-Man movies and I came to the conclusion that movies were the absolute worst way to tell these stories. In modern comic book storytelling a story arc is usually 5-6 issues and a story may be made of many arcs. I was just ahead of my time because Netflix and Amazon didn’t exist yet. HBO wasn’t making epic stories like Game of Thrones. ...

Black Science #3 - Remender likes drowning people in the mud

Rick Remender's AMA

Back when we looked at Black Science Volume 1, I noted that Rick Remender seemed to choose drowning as a method of death in a few books. At the time He had done it recently in Uncanny X-Force as well. So during Rick Remender’s AMA 2 weeks ago, I decided to ask him about it. I didn’t think I’d get a response with how popular Remender is, but I guess I got my question in early enough: ...

Changing Up the Site Theme here at Comic POW!

It’s been a few years since we last changed the theme here at Comic POW! We went from one of the official Wordpress Themes to the one that is currently active (as I write this post) and will be documented here. The theme has worked well for the site, highlighting both the newest material as well as older material that continues to generate views and/or comments. But, as often happens with free themes, the author stopped updating it and last year during the Baltimore Comic-Con coverage, it was a real pain to set the articles up. So over the next day or so I’ll be working to update to a new theme that works with the latest and greatest features on the backend which should make publishing a much nicer experience. Below, I document the site as it has appeared for the past few years: ...

Deadly Class TV Show - Much of the Freshman Class

The Deadly Class TV Adaptation

At this point in my life, I’m perfectly fine with divergences among adaptations of media. Gone are the days where I demanded TV shows and books to be perfect copies of the original material. Each medium has something they do very well - for example, superhero costumes tend to work better with the suspension of disbelief of the comics medium than it does in live action - hence the X-Men costume changes for the movies. So nowadays, when I experience an adaptation, I like to enjoy it on its own as well as take note of how the property had to be adapted for the new medium. ...

Deadly Class

I Love the 80s: Deadly Class HC Books 1 and 2

Deadly Class is a very interesting story for someone like me to read. As was played for laughs in the 2012 adaptation of 21 Jump Street, the dynamics of high school cliques have changed from when Rick Remender was in high school. The TV shows and movies I grew up watching spoke to Gen X and the Boomers about how stratified school was and the tensions in finding your group. Remender ratchets this up way past 11 with Marcus ending up in a school for the children of assassins and crime families. There are literally deadly consequences to the choices of who to befriend and who to snub; what teens felt was real transmuted into reality. By the time I was in high school, 9 years after Remender, most of the rigidity of cliques had faded and even nerdom was not the curse it had been before Bill Gates and Steve Jobs became some of the richest men in America. In fact, in my high school, one of the top cheerleaders was also in my AP classes. ...

Baltimore Comic-Con 2019: Interview with Creator of Gene515

At artist alley at Baltimore Comic-Con I found Gene515, an illustrated novel about a post-apocalyptic world in which some animals can talk and have full human rights. The idea piqued my interest, so I spoke with the creator about the world and how he came up with these ideas. https://youtu.be/hzX0ZdVnuOE

Baltimore Comic-Con 2019: Interview with creator of Shahnameh For Kids

We’re all familiar with Greek Mythology, but tend not to know much about other cultures. Well, meet an Arsia Rozegar who’d like to change that by introducing kids to Persian Mythology. We discuss why he created the series, what we can learn from Persian Mythology, and similarities and differences with other, more familiar, myths. https://youtu.be/exUt1pNq7IY
