At the convention I had the pleasure of speaking with Liz DeJesus, a prolific author, who has written comics, books, and short stories. Her stories often contain Fairy Tale or Supernatural elements. I spoke with Drew Crowder about this great publisher that is putting women in the forefront of its publications, #Hashtag Comics. https://youtu.be/vxLQw9frcYU Not only are women the lead characters in both Tailwands and Carpe Noctum, but the concepts sound particularly interesting - especially Carpe Noctum’s assertion that Las Vegas is run by Vampires, Werewolves, etc. Makes perfect sense for a city in which everyone’s asleep during the day. The first interview I conducted this year was with Tiffany Ciper of Alien Spike, a web comic that is in the middle of a Kickstarter to fund a physical print copy of the book. https://youtu.be/FhKs1CRWzeI Just like Kata Kane, who I interviewed last year, the art in this comic was inspired by manga. While Altar Girl is about a high school girl visited by angels and demons, Alien Spike is about school kids and aliens. Or, as Ms Ciper describes it, “A JRPG meets Space Opera”. That sounds like it’s definitely something up my alley. Comic POW! will definitely be taking a look at this story in the future (once the Comic-Con rush is over). ...

Just as in years past, I’ll be covering Baltimore Comic-Con this year. There will be a post per day where I’ll be live-blogging at the event. Then, each night I’ll post as many interviews and panel posts as I can get in before the day is up. Also look for cosplay posts, hopefully daily -but it’ll depend on the rendering speed of the software. Speaking of rendering, I’m hoping to incorporate video this year in addition to the audio interviews I’ve done for the past few years. If last year is any indication, I’m probably going to end up with more information and footage than I can post every day, so keep checking back even after Comic-Con is over. ...

I read Scott Pilgrim in its original manga-sized, black and white form when it first came out. With the final volume of the color version coming out this year, I thought it would be a great time to revisit the story as well as looking at how the addition of color changes things. I’ll be exploring the story and themes volume by volume. This time, volume 5. For the most part, everyone’s era of extended adolescence is coming to an end. Some of the blame for this development can be laid upon the shoulders of Stephen Stiles; the longer the band goes without practicing, the more adrift the characters feel. They start looking for other things to bring meaning to life and that includes growing up and realizing the dream of the band is mostly over. Kim Pines decides to move back to her hometown. Even Scott Pilgrim declares he’ll be the best 24 year old ever. His only lacking trait in this volume seems to be his inability to remember the key to his apartment. By the end, his parents have even helped him get his own place.

Thanks to a college student complaining about reading Y: The Last Man and Perseopolis when he thought he’d be reading innocent comics like Batman, people have been collecting inappropriate Batman panels - mostly from the Golden and Silver Ages.
